Distracted driving is a major issue for motorists in Georgia and around the country. In 2015, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that 391,000 people received injuries in vehicle accidents caused by such inattentive motorists. and 3,477 people died in such accidents.

Progressive Insurance did an online study in August 2017. Approximately 1,00 licensed drivers aged 18 and older who are not Progressive customers responded. About one-third of the participants said that they felt secure texting while driving. But in excess of 90 percent believe that texting and driving should be prohibited.

This study shows that 62 percent of young adults believe that performing tasks on their phones are safe while only 6 percent of older drivers feel these are safe things to do. Twenty-one percent of male drivers are also highly confident in their ability to text and drive, nearly twice as many as women.

Eighty-three percent of all drivers think that police officers should stop drivers from texting and driving. But 34 percent of these drivers also believe that they can safely drive and text. Moreover, 65 percent of U.S. drivers believe that doing activities on a cell phone is the top cause of accidents. There are additional activities that can take drivers’ eyes off the road. While talking and looking at occupants within the car, drivers can steer out of their lane. They can plow into oncoming traffic while adjusting their seat or rearview mirror. Drivers can also lose control of the vehicle while eating, drinking, or smoking cigarettes.

People who have been injured in car accidents caused by distracted drivers might want to meet with an attorney to determine how to proceed. The attorney could attempt to reach a settlement with the at-fault driver’s insurance company, but if the offer is insufficient filing a lawsuit might be necessary.
