Georgia woman charged after fatal motorcycle accident

A 66-year-old woman has been charged with voluntary manslaughter in connection with a Feb. 13 motor vehicle accident in Fannin County that claimed the life of a U.S. Navy veteran. The crash occurred at the intersection of Lebanon Road and Madola Road in Epworth at approximately 5:08 p.m. The woman has also been cited for failing to yield and driving on the wrong side of the road.

According to a Georgia State Police report, the accident occurred when the woman attempted to make a left turn from Madola Road onto Lebanon Road directly in the path of an oncoming Harley Davidson motorcycle. Media reports reveal that the rider's frantic efforts to avoid a collision left a skid mark on the roadway 39 feet long. Reports suggest that the woman did not notice the approaching motorcycle.

The 58-year-old motorcyclist was pronounced dead after being transported to Fannin Regional Hospital. He was appropriately attired and wearing a crash helmet at the time of the accident according to the GSP. Both the woman's car and the motorcycle were badly damaged in the crash, and a local towing service was called in to remove them from the roadway.

Motorcyclists are often killed or catastrophically injured in car accidents such as this one because motorists did not see riders or misjudged their speed. When pursuing civil remedies on behalf of injured motorcyclists or the families of motorcyclists who have been killed, experienced personal injury attorneys may take steps to ensure that the damages they seek are sufficient to cover long-term medical costs or the lost paycheck of a breadwinner.
