Unraveling accident statistics for dump trucks

When driving down roads in Georgia, motorists may see accidents involving dump trucks or other large vehicles, such as ready-mix concrete trucks. Statistics show that there has recently been a slight increase in crashes involving these large vehicles.

Steps have been taken by federal regulators to minimize these crashes. Initiatives have also been put in place by insurance companies and industry safety experts. The focus has been on reducing driver fatigue and making better use of technology that allows those in positions of responsibility to have a better idea of what happens when these large trucks are on the road.

However, advanced monitoring and increases in vehicle insurance premiums for large trucks have done little to curb accidents. The year 2016 is the most recent year that statistics are available for accidents involving dump trucks and concrete delivery trucks. According to statistics from 2016, there was a 9 percent increase in crashes involving dump trucks that required a vehicle to be towed away. Dump truck accidents that led to injuries increased by 2.7 percent.

The situation was not any better for ready-mix concrete delivery trucks. Tollway accidents involving these vehicles spiked by 9.6 percent in 2016. There was also a 3 percent rise in accidents with these vehicles that led to injury. Fatalities involving ready-mix concrete delivery trucks jumped from 33 in 2015 to 38 in 2016.

Interestingly, although the number of serious dump truck accidents increased in 2016, there was a slight decrease in the number of these accidents that resulted in fatalities. In 2015, there were 369 fatalities. In 2016, there were 367.

When a person is a victim of an accident involving a large truck, they may want to talk to a personal injury attorney. Legal counsel could help a client get compensation for their injuries and losses. They may gather information from investigators and law enforcement to get a clearer picture of the accident. This information could be used to represent the client before insurance companies or in court.
