Drunk driving car crashes often have devastating consequences for everyone involved. For example, a 20-year-old Georgia man may be forced to give up his dream of becoming a U.S. Army officer after being hit by a drunk driver on Feb. 12. In addition, the 63-year-old man accused of hitting him is facing multiple charges, including driving under the influence.

According to media reports, the victim was taking his morning motorcycle ride to the Military College at the University of North Georgia when a pickup truck suddenly backed out of a driveway and into his path near Dahlonega. He struck the pickup and suffered serious injuries, including a broken femur, broken wrist and severely fractured knee. Since the accident, he has endured multiple surgeries to repair his injuries. Unfortunately, it is unknown if he will recover enough to resume the rigorous cadet program at UNG.

The defendant in the case told a local TV station that he had been consuming alcohol the night before the accident, but he did not consume alcohol the morning of the collision. He claimed that fog obstructed his view, making it difficult for him to see the victim. He also said his wife died in September after a long illness and he is also suffering from debilitating health issues.

When car crashes are caused by negligent drivers, injured victims have the right to pursue compensation through the legal system. With the help of an attorney, a plaintiff could file a personal injury lawsuit against the at-fault driver for various damages, including current and future medical expenses, pain and suffering, lost wages and property loss. If the suit is successful, the victim could obtain a settlement that helps them rebuild their lives.
