5 causes of motorcycle collisions

Riding your motorcycle is inherently more dangerous than driving your car. When a collision occurs while you are on your motorcycle, you are at a greater risk of getting seriously hurt or dying because you do not have the protection of an enclosed vehicle. Plus, it is more difficult to maintain control of a motorcycle than a passenger car.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Highway Loss Data Institute, nearly 5,000 motorcyclists died in accidents in 2016. Here are some of the most common causes of fatal motorcycle wrecks.

1. A vehicle suddenly turns left in front of you

This is one of the most frustrating things to experience as a motorcyclist. Sometimes, drivers misjudge your speed or fail to see you and proceed to cut you off at an intersection. This occurs because of blind spots, distractions and inattention.

2. A vehicle suddenly changing lanes

Another common reason for motorcycle collisions is when a driver switches lanes and hits you. Your motorcycle may be in a blind spot, and drivers may only be looking for other vehicles instead of a small bike.

3. A vehicle rear-ends you

When you stop for a red light, stop sign or maybe even some baby ducks crossing the road, you expect the people behind you to stop as well. Unfortunately, not every driver will notice you stop and may plow into you.

4. A driver opens the car door

When you see a big gap in traffic on a street, you may think you are safe to ride at a normal speed. However, you must watch out for parked cars. Some people just do not pay attention to their surroundings, and if one opens a car door, you may not be able to avoid hitting it.

5. Drunk drivers

You are at risk of a collision caused by sober drivers, but it is even worse when motorists are under the influence. Drunk drivers have an even harder time noticing motorcycles.
