Injuries that arise after a truck accident

In Georgia, as in other states, commercial trucks are all too frequently colliding with passenger vehicles. These accidents often result in death, and in 97 percent of such fatal crashes, it is the occupant of the passenger vehicle who dies. When accidents are non-fatal, they can still leave victims with catastrophic injuries and even psychological issues.

Spinal cord conditions can be among the most severe types of physical injuries. When vertebrae have been fractured or crushed in a collision, temporary or permanent paralysis could result. This often means lifelong treatment and high medical expenses. By being thrown against the window, steering wheel or airbag, victims could also suffer from broken bones, especially broken arms, legs, hips and skulls.

Traumatic brain injuries are another frequent outcome of truck accidents. These are characterized by head injuries and mild or severe concussions. Symptoms may take days or weeks to appear, making a correct diagnosis rather difficult. In addition, flying debris can leave victims with cuts and puncture wounds, some of which may leave scars.

The mental trauma of a truck accident can also contribute to the development of post-traumatic stress disorder. According to the National Centers for PTSD, post traumatic stress disorder afflicts up to 9 percent of all auto accident survivors. Symptoms include recurring anxiety attacks, flashbacks and nightmares.

If successful, a trucking accident claim could cover medical expenses, vehicle damage, lost wages and even emotional trauma. The victim will need to show that the trucker was negligent or reckless, which is why it's often essential to hire a lawyer. After a case evaluation, the lawyer can bring in experts to gather proof, reconstruct the accident and determine the extent of the injuries. Negotiations can then take place between the lawyer and the trucking company's own legal representatives.
